Roadmap
The Freedom Fone development roadmap has experienced a number of twists and turns to date. This is largely due to the need to prioritise deployment demands of information activists.
What hasn't changed is the intention to ensure that each new major version will introduce new capabilities in the framework, increasing the potential hardware interfaces that it can work on, the number of modules available, and the front-end and CMS integration possibilities.
Early thinking had us set course to work first on a hosted version of Freedom Fone that would initially be accessible through VoIP at hosted.freedomfone.org and via skypeuser freedomfone. The motivation was that a hosted version would be easier to setup, maintain and upgrade.
Practicality soon intervened and we realised that early partners would more likely be motivated information activists with unreliable internet access. For these partners we needed to first develop an appliance version that would be required to run using specific GSM telephony devices.
