Radio Maria FM Dar es Salaam

Status of Freedom Fone Deployment:
Suspended
Year first used Freedom Fone:
2010

Radio Maria FM is a Catholic Radio Station operating in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Radio Maria collaborated with Farm Radio International to pilot Freedom Fone as a channel for 2-way communication with listeners to an agriculture extension programme called Heka Heka Vijijini (Busy in the village). Kubatana trainers conducted training at the radio station in late 2009.

Initial plans were for listeners to use Freedom Fone to:

  • Interact with broadcasters by leaving SMS & voice messages
  • Interact with other callers/listeners by leaving SMS & voice messages
  • Listen to repeat programs
  • Listen to special programming (songs, entertainment and messages)

Ultimately the service was predominantly used for the first 2 activities in the list above. The deployment ended once the Farm Radio International sponsored initiative completed late in 2010.

Radio Maria resumed their use of Freedom Fone in mid 2011 following a training workshop held at their training centre in Dar es Salaam in May 2011. It will once again be used primarily as a feedback channel for listeners via SMS and voice messages.
